Sketchbook as Object part 2: Research 2.0 - Sophie Peanut

 Looking through her sketches and the 5 min sketch blog I like her approach to drawing, it’s very spontaneous and there’s a lot less emphasis on perfection it’s just ‘just draw. She also mentions how you should accept that you may not finish every sketch and that a sketchbook is used for experimentation and practice. Finally, her tip on ‘embrace wonky’ is also helpful especially if an artist who is a perfectionist to read it. Her use of watercolour and pen is such a nice style, in comparison to my own work I have used this quick sketch technique a lot and the watercolour and pen a few times too.  Example…… I do like the look of the pen with watercolour, sometimes the pen bleeds and it brings a bit more character to the drawing but also pen on dry watercolour also helps making the image bolder and highlights certain elements better.

I like the size and how much of a scene shes captured in these ones, it can be folded up into a booklet just using one continious piece. The quick sketch style and the splash of colours look really good together they bring the drawing to life. It kind of reminds me of doing a panaramic on your phone.
 

 

There is any really but the only problems I see with the 5 minute sketch method is that although you may be drawing a scene or a person to the point of being recognisable but sometimes because you’re working so quick you don’t learn proper proportions and mechanics of what you’re actually drawing. I also feel the quicker sketches you do you tend to not want to develop skills or add more details to future work cause this method is so quick and easy; although nothing wrong with that I just feel personally you can get a lot out of spending time on one picture sometimes more then a quick maybe not so accurate drawing. However, I do use a quick sketch approach myself sometimes and it can be fun an I do like the aesthetic it gives.
